Southern Roots: A BBQ Reunion sells out, raises record funds

The fourth annual Southern Roots: A BBQ Reunion was more than just a celebration of mouthwatering food and community—it was a powerful show of support for families impacted by Kleefstra syndrome. Held in Travelers Rest, South Carolina, the event brought together approximately 1,600 people and raised an event record amount of funds (total to be announced soon) to support the advocacy and research efforts of IDefine.

The scenic town was filled with the smoky aromas of sizzling meat as more than 35 of the nation’s top chefs and pitmasters fired up their grills, serving up unforgettable dishes to a crowd that included 18 Kleefstra syndrome (KS) families.

But the impact of the event went far beyond the food.

Monica, Marissa, Mason and Mike Christy from Michigan

“This was our first year attending Southern Roots, and it was amazing,” said Monica Christy of Michigan. “Our daughter, Marissa, always loves seeing all her Kleefstra family. The food was delicious, the weather was gorgeous, but the best part is building friendships and making memories with our KS family. Seeing everyone come together to raise money for such a worthy cause means so much to us.”

For many families, the event offers a rare opportunity to connect face-to-face with others who understand their journey, creating a sense of belonging and shared purpose.

“My heart is so full,” said Geoff Rhyne, CEO of IDefine and creator of Southern Roots. “Seeing our kids rekindling friendships and playing, and new families connecting—that’s what community is all about. The icing on the cake is that the funds raised will fuel our pursuit of life-changing treatments and, ultimately, a cure.”

Southern Roots has quickly earned a reputation as one of the most anticipated events in the region. Allie Knight of CB Events, the production company behind the gathering, noted, “We completely sold out this year’s event which speaks volumes to the festival Southern Roots has become. We can’t wait to take all this energy and put it towards making the fifth year just as amazing! It’s such a special feeling to watch all these chefs, attendees, partners and volunteers all come together to really make a difference.”

Mark your calendars: the fifth annual Southern Roots: A BBQ Reunion is set for April 11, 2026, and promises to be even bigger and better. Don’t miss your chance to be part of this incredible celebration of food, family, and hope.
