Southern Roots: A BBQ Reunion marks milestone fifth year with sold-out crowds and strong fundraising
The fifth annual Southern Roots: A BBQ Reunion reached new heights in 2026, blending world-class barbecue, community spirit and significant fundraising into a milestone celebration supporting families affected by Kleefstra syndrome.
The weekend-long event kicked off with a new addition: a Friday night welcome dinner and silent auction, A Night with Ella’s Buddies, held at the scenic Riverrain Farm. Hosted by several friends of the Rhyne family (Ella’s family) and of the nonprofit – the evening set the tone for the weekend, raising approximately $25,000 to support Kleefstra syndrome research while bringing families and supporters together in a bucolic setting.
Momentum carried into Saturday’s main event, which once again sold out drawing approximately 1,700 attendees, including 20 KS families. Guests were treated to what many described as the best culinary lineup yet, featuring an impressive roster of top pitmasters and chefs from across the country. A newly introduced seafood fest in the VIP section added a fresh dimension to the experience, expanding the event’s already diverse food offerings.
Beyond the flavors and festivities, the impact remained front and center. The 2026 event raised around $100,000 for IDefine to advance research aimed at improving the lives of individuals and families affected by Kleefstra syndrome.
“Southern Roots is always one of my favorite weekends of the year, and I continue to be humbled by the growing support of the local community, the chefs who graciously volunteer their time and skill, and the KS families who travel great distances to spend time together and support the event,” said Rhyne.
For many attendees, Southern Roots continues to be more than a food festival, it’s a meaningful opportunity for connection. Families traveled from across the country to reunite, share experiences and build lasting relationships within the Kleefstra syndrome community.
“Year five was a truly magical one – from the beautiful weather to what guests described as the best food yet, it was the perfect day to celebrate IDefine and come together as a community once again for a great cause,” said Allie Knight, event producer with CB Events.
As Southern Roots celebrates its fifth year, planning is already underway for next year, tentatively scheduled for April 10, 2027.
